It ends in 1720, roughly the time when the spritsail topmast was superseded by the jib boom and other innovations of eighteenth-century rigging. The book’s 12 chapters cover every aspect of the ship’s rigging of the period, from the lower masts and bowsprit to the running rigging of the topsails and topgallants. Over 350 fine line drawings illustrate every item used in the rigging. Twenty-five halftones, extensively annotated, illustrate typical ships that plied the seas in the days of the bowsprit mast — English merchantmen and gun ships, French and Dutch men-of-war, and more.
In compiling this volume, R. C. Anderson consulted not only the literature of the period, listed in the extensive bibliography, but also famous ship models created throughout the seventeenth century — some with contemporary rigging in almost perfect condition. The result is an indispensable resource for model builders, maritime historians, sailing ship buffs — anyone interested in authentic documentation of ships’ rigging during a crucial period in the history of sailing vessels.

Hard-To-Find Information Now At The Tip of Your Fingers

In another review, I said that one needed 3 books as a foundation for the hobby of model ship building. Oops, I was wrong. This is number 4!
Since I'm building a model of the Mayflower (1620), this is the book that has all the answers for all the questions I have. From mast tapering, angles, and length, to rigging hints and methods. This is the square riggers handbook. There is a ton of information, yes covering 1600-1625 period ships. Although there is more for the later part of the title, not to fear, the early part of the title is very well covered.
Despite the hard to read (and messy) illustrations, and weak reductions of original materials, the content of the book requires it get a 5-star rating. Even the dated language doesn't matter. Move past that, and the knowledge is abundant.
If you're not a modeler, and a fan of square rigged sailing vessels, then this is the book to learn how they operated. Very thorough in it's coverage of all the aspects of the vessel's rigging. You can almost feel the ropes in your hands.
So I'm sorry to say, you'll need this book too in your collection... Don't delay.....

Are you interested in all aspects of Square Rigged Ships?

This book is actually written by and for model ship builders. I gave it a 5 star rating because of the difficulty finding information of this nature. It is somewhat dry reading, but the diagrams are for the most part clear. Some of the whole ship detailed drawings, lost something in the reduction and are difficult to read. Much of the information here came from the authors detailed study of the St George model as well as impossible to find rare book references from the late 1600's.
I love every aspect of sailing and I'm particularly interested in learning whatever I can about how ship- rigged boats were actually rigged. This book provides some great information on the terminology of the complicated rigging of these vessels, as well as some of the construction details of the spars. In it you will find information on spars, proportions of the same, standing rigging, and running rigging, and the spirtsail topmast (which went out of use after 1720). If you are interested in learning everything you can about square-rigged ships, this is one of the few references still in print. Buy one while you still can. I am very happy with the book. Because of the rarity of the information presented here it will not be the sort of book I would loan out.

I've been vegetarian for over ten years, and am always looking for creative, healthy ways to spice up my cooking. I've taught students from more than 100 countries, including many from Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) who were eager to share their languages and cuisines with me. However, there are very few cookbooks that focus on this region, even less so from a vegetarian context, so this is one cuisine that remained relatively unknown to me.

In "Silk Road Vegetarian," Dahlia Abraham-Klein has compiled over 120 vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free recipes that serve as an exploration and a celebration of the foods from the Silk Road, from elegant jeweled polos / palaus, curries and dal, Persian kookoos and soups/stews, Bukharian stuffed veggies to shawarma-spiced potatoes, curried veggies, and a wealth of lighter desserts.

Along the way, you'll read about Dahlia's culinary pilgrimage and her family's roots in Persia, Afghanistan, Bukhara, India and Israel. The book begins with an excellent and compact illustrated guide to the spice pantry, tips on basic preparation for tofu, legumes, rice and quinoa (with a handy illustrated guide to the various types of rice available and four pages of descriptions and cooking instructions), an excellent guide to food preservation via freezing (which I have not seen in other cookbooks) that gives a step-by-step overview of various cooking and storing methods that will allow you to make the most of an abundance of seasonal produce (or leftovers from your CSA box).

You'll find quick and basic staples like hummus, tahini, harissa, za'atar, and chutney, light appetizers including stuffed grape leaves, kookoo (herb frittata), Sephardic leek patties, and an amazing Indian red lentil falafel (especially since I am not normally a fan of either lentils OR falafel!). There are many fresh salads like orange and fennel, minted beet salad, curried spinach salad with apples and grapes, and roasted veggies (I particularly enjoyed the roasted carrots with feta and parsley, which I made with rainbow carrots and sheep's milk feta).

Curries and hearty stews tend to dominate the main dishes, including curried lentil burgers, chickpea and lentil curries. I really enjoyed the Afghan squash goulash and Afghan risoto; Afghan cooking is relatively unknown to me. As I am a huge fan of rice dishes (and frequently serve them as a main meal), I really appreciated the wide range of polos (shirin polo, with jewel-like dried orange strips, adas polo with apricots and caramelized onions) and Bukharian pilafs. The quick and easy veggie sides are the perfect way to round out a meal.

The chapter on desserts offers many lighter (mostly vegan) options, including several rice puddings, parfaits, quick breads, and fruit-based desserts (I tried the orange blossom date balls and they were a hit). Those who are on a gluten-free diet will also appreciate that all the baked goods are also GF, including buckwheat hamentaschen, cinnamon apple cake, and berry-almond coconut scones.

The instructions are clear (and the font thankfully large / dark enough to read easily from a cookbook holder) and the ingredients should be commonly available at your supermarket (despite the many Persian and Central Asian recipes, Dahlia uses commonly available substitutes - cranberries for barberries, for example, although you will find one that calls for limoo Omani - dried limes). Gorgeous full-color photos illustrate about half of the recipes. There are step-by-step photos for some of the techniques, making "Silk Road Vegetarian" approachable by any level of cook.

"Silk Road Vegetarian" has given me many new quick and healthy recipes that can be assembled even on a hectic weeknight, and the exotic spices will transport your taste buds. I loved the section on preserving and freezing fruits and veggies, as all too often I found myself throwing away perfectly good produce. This is a perfect cookbook for one who is new to vegetarian / vegan cooking as the clear instructions (particularly for washing and soaking the various types of rice and the guide to preserving fruits and veggies) and step-by-step photos make it easy to follow along.

A Culinary Treasure

This is my new go to cookbook for preparing delicious and healthful exotic dishes with ease. I am making it a point to try a different recipe every Friday. Dahlia Klein uses fresh ingredients and spices to create interesting new flavors that are simply stated, over the top. I recommend this cookbook to both aspiring cooks and experienced chefs. The ingredients are accessible and step by step instructions flawless. I have tried the Persian green herbed stew, roasted beet and nectarine salad with lime zest, yellow split pea soup (Indian style), Bukharian green herbed rice (makes for yummy leftovers), pesto zucchini (Italian style) and roasted cauliflower salad with tahini and za'atar (Middle Eastern). Her recipes are appealing; fragrant and colorful, nutritious and traditional of cultures whose cuisines were not part of the American quilt until recently. The color photos are most helpful. Definitely add this to your repertoire.

Silk Road Vegetarian is truly one of a kind. As a Jewish woman I feel that every cookbook I encounter has the same types of boring fish, chicken, and meat dishes that everyone already knows and is tired of. Silk Road Vegetarian gives me so many exotic dining options bursting with flavor. I love knowing that any recipe I choose is gluten free and vegetarian since I can cook and eat for my family without feeling guilty afterwards. Another thing is that a lot of these recipes are cultural recipes that have never been written down formally, and only passed down through word of mouth from generation to generation for hundreds of years. Having them all in one place, and with healthy alternatives, is a huge time saver and ensures that they will be forgotten.

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to spice up their menus and give their families and guests something new and exciting to try!

This book is a classic

Gene Getz is one of the most seminal thinkers on the church today. This book was originally published in 1975 but it is just as useful today as when it was first published (revised and expanded in 1984) - because it is grounded on biblical principles. Terminology has changed over the years but principles based on biblical truth remain the same. Getz argues from the Book of Acts and the Epistles that in order to create a mature body of believers three vital experiences are needed: Vital learning experiences with God's Word (Christians need to be "word-centered" we might say today), Vital relational experiences with God and one another (We might say "community" centered today), and vital witnessing experiences with the non-Christian world (We say "missional" today). Getz points out: "To neglect any one of these facets of New Testament life is to interfere with the God-ordained plan for edification in the local church." This book is a classic on practical ecclesiology. Just the sections in which Getz does an inductive study of the Book of Acts and the Epistles as the foundation for the principles he articulates, makes the book worth having as a teaching tool for elders and church leaders. Straight And Solid

Getz' book is sorely needed in a day when human opinion and experience as to "what works" has supplanted the Biblical directives as to what the church should be according to the Word of God.
Getz presents a balanced and thorough study of what church is about, the evangelism of the lost (in the world) and the edification of believers (in our gatherings).
He presents principles drawn directly from inductive study, and even presents appendices filled with verse after verse to document his conclusions.
This books serves as a blueprint (since it is anchored to Scripture) for churches bent on pleasing God. If you can dig up a copy of this one, dig it up!

It will sharpen your focus of the church!

Getz successfully attempts to set forth a biblical model for the church. He does so by looking at the church through the lens of Scripture, of history and finally, of culture. Throughout the book he emphasizes his dictum: People leads to function which in turn leads to form. That is, wherever people are they will be doing something together, which necessitates form. He points out that whereas the Bible gives us considerable information on function (i.e., preaching), it is relatively silent on form (how we put together a sermon).
The strength of this book is Getz's solid exegesis of Scripture. Although it is impossible to set aside all the presuppositions we have when we come to the Bible, Getz succeeds better than most. I was especially appreciative of his analysis of the first century culture and how difficult it would be for us to mimic first century forms.
Although Getz deliberately chooses to concentrate on exegesis, I would have like to see him look at church and culture in more depth. He was also somewhat ambiguous as to the plurality of elders in the local church. On one hand he argues the plurality of elders is due to the numerous house churches located in a city, on the other hand he also seems to argue that individual congregations should have a plurality of elders.
Coming from a Christian Church/church of Christ background, I really appreciated his in-depth look at the church. Traditional Christian Church theology argues that not only does the New Testament give us the functions of the church, but the forms as well. This book certainly "sharpened" my focus of the church by helping be discern between culture and biblical absolutes.

I got this book through the Kindle First program, and it was a great choice. This book is suspenseful and well-written. I genuinely had a hard time putting it down. I didn't think it was the kind of "edge-of-your-seat" book that some thrillers are -- rather, it has a great plot line, and will keep you trying to figure things out.

Perhaps what I most liked about this book is that I didn't know what was going to happen, and how the story would turn out. To me, when you can't predict the story line, you're reading a great book!

it better be a darn good one from page one

Although I am an avid reader, fiction is rarely on my list. Being business-minded I spend quite a bit more time there than here. I say that only because when I choose a novel to read, it better be a darn good one from page one, or I'm gone and on to something else. I wasn't disappointed. (unless you count not being able to finish it in one sitting (damn work!)) It took very little time to connect with the characters, to feel like they are people you know, or could know; to become part of the community of Hardy's Walk and feel as though you grew up there. While this isn't suspenseful like a murder-mystery would be, you still knew you were in for a ride. Crooked Little Lies is a page turner and as with all of Sissel's novels, brings to light how easy it is to take wrong turns, to think that just this one thing won't lead to the next or the next or the next, and to suddenly have massive upheaval in your life wishing you could turn back time just once. Thought provoking as usual and a reminder that we are all human, we all make mistakes and we all have a choice. An easy read, well written, with developed characters you identify with immediately, this book is a great read across the board.

A Truly Marvelous Book of Wordplay

Evans has done more than a great job of introducing people to a large cross-section of wordplay: He has produced one of the wittiest wordplay books I have ever read. His declared goal was to introduce readers to wordplay that is particularly funny, clever, or irreverent, and he has succeeded admirably. Even when Evans covers material found elsewhere, as in his chapter on insane real book titles, he plays with the material and adds his own wordplay. For example, he says that the book The Joy of Uncircumcising "has raised quite a flap, especially among our male members." Indeed, his entire section on insane real book titles contains his own hilarious, and often bawdy, wordplay.

What's more, he has sprinkled his personal touch throughout the book, as when he points out what others hadn't realized, such as that "n-sane policy" is an anagram of "Nancy Pelosi" and that "nice parasitic role" is an anagram of "career politicians." I particularly like his appendix, consisting of more than 400 homophones of real names listed on Zabasearch.com. Although I've seen some lists of people's funny names, I had never seen hundreds of hilarious homophonic names taken from real phone directories, yielding such sequences as "Anita Bath," "Anita Beaver," "Anita Beer," "Anita Bohn," "Anita Break," "Anita Carr," "Anita Doctor," and so on. Evans points out that some of the names become even funnier when one adds their locations; for example, "Dixie Normous" in Washington, D.C.

As to any critic who would say that much of the material in the book is available elsewhere (if one spends months reading books, articles, and websites), I'd defy anyone to point to any single book that is as comprehensive as Tyrannosaurus Lex. More than a reference book, it is encyclopedic in scope - a book that will appeal not only to seasoned logologists but also to wordplay novices. Even so, today's most popular logologist, Richard Lederer, has said of Evans that "nobody makes the alphabet dance more brilliantly and entertainingly" than he. Quite right!

In short, if you like wordplay, wit, and popular culture creatively combined, you can do no better than Tyrannosaurus Lex.

An excellent primer of logology

The focus of this book is what's known as recreational linguistics, or Logology. Basically, this is an introductions to the different forms of wordplay possible in the English language. This is a work of scholarship that's meant to be accessible to the masses. Therefore, the theory is minimal, and the simple explanations and examples are maximal.

This is not a guide to doing your own wordplay. It's descriptive rather than prescriptive. It tells you what's there -- and describes the flexibility of our language -- rather than giving you rules of how to play with language yourself. It's not a book of word games like games scholar David Parlett's excellent THE Book of Word Games.

Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in how our language can fold back on itself and logically contradict itself, or who enjoy how several layers of opposing meaning can coexist in a single phrase or statement. Anyone who enjoys learning about such things should enjoy this book.

Rather disappointing

"Tyrannosaurus Lex" is a mildly interesting collection of woefully abbreviated lists of examples of various types of word-play, the components of which could easily be dragged from cyberspace given an afternoon's creative Googling. For the price, I had expected better. If you are new to the field of Logology, you may be rewarded with a few chuckles. If you have been a long-time fan of writers such as Richard Lederer and Willard R. Espy, there's nothing here you haven't seen before.
