About the Author
Gerald Weissmann is Emeritus Professor of Medicine (Rheumatology), Research Professor of Medicine, and Director of the Biotechnology Study Center at the New York University School of Medicine. He is also Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. In 2002, he was elected to Galileo’s Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei of Rome (1603), the world’s oldest scholarly society. He is a Master and past president of the American College of Rheumatology, a past president of the Harvey Society, a Fellow of the AAAS and of the New York Academy of Medicine. He is on the board of the New York Academy of Sciences, a trustee of the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, MA and on the Advisory Board of the Ellison Medical Foundation. He is chairman of the jury for the Prix Galien USA, an award that has been called the “Nobel Prize of Pharmaceuticals.” A member of PEN, his essays and reviews of cultural history have been published in The New Republic, The London Review of Books and The New York Times Book Review and have been collected in eight volumes from The Woods Hole Cantata (1985) to Mortal and Immortal DNA: Science and the Lure of Myth (2009).

Misleading Title
By Understated
I'm an avid reader and love to read about science, so was fascinated by the topic of this book, unfortunately the book had little to do with it's title. It's really a bunch of rambling essays most of which don't even touch on epigenetics, much less the concept of social media and epigenetics. Very dissappointing.

Well-written, but elitist views overwhelm

I'm honestly surprised by the universally positive reviews (so far) of this book. I had high hopes for it, as it addresses many areas in which I'm interested. The positives: very well-written in general, and it does interweave modern topics and people with historical ones (if somewhat awkwardly at times). Few books even attempt to do this, so I give the author credit for that. The negatives, though, are too many to describe in detail. He places an unyielding emphasis on the "elite" and "the best" and how others-- by virtue of their schooling, genetic background, or even opinions-- come up short. He also fails to mention any contribution of any Eastern culture but focuses on Bostonians and the French as the "proper" people and the rest, it seems, as the "beast." This is ironic when the book itself contains errors, typos in scientific terms, even a capitalization error in a section ON EDITING that describes a person from "the sticks" as "a buffoon."
