About the Author
Jan L. Harrington, author of more than 35 books on a variety of technical subjects, has been writing about databases since 1984. She retired in 2013 from her position as professor and chair of the Department of Computing Technology at Marist College, where she taught database design and management, data communications, computer architecture, and the impact of technology on society for 25 years.

Not impressed

I was surprised at how quickly I got though this book, in fact the biggest delays were in trying to determine the correct values of the many typos liberally scattered through the diagrams & examples in the book. These ranged from typos to mistakes in relationship cardinalities to just bad database design.

I have built & designed systems with flat files for decades (wow - that was a scary thing to re-read ;-) and although I've picked up a lot on Relational systems along the way, I wanted to confirm my learnings and formalise my understandings of relational systems, hence reading this book.

Sadly it has been a real disappointment, as I found so many mistakes in the book that I cannot really trust it, and so have started again with another author. Also, along the way I found her explanations - of things that I do know about - very confused and confusing (concurrency etc.)

All in all, mostly a waste of my time (but thankfully it's quick to read ;-)

I couldn't really recommend it to anyone.

This should be required reading

I have been working with databases for about ten years now. I consider myself an intermediate user. I have had exposure to mainframe systems, mini systems and desktop systems, including DB/2, Oracle, MSSQL, Access, Paradox, dBase and others. I have learned a lot on my own, and I recognize that I have much to learn. That said, I wish I had come across a book like this one YEARS AGO. This book breaks down database types, concepts, terminology and fundamentals in a way that can be understood by anyone with the will to learn about databases. I am not much of a reader. For me, reading is work. Yet I have already read this book half way through in about four days. If I were an avid reader, I'm sure I would have finished it.

While this book will not walk you through building a database in any particular database product, it WILL teach you how to look at your data and determine the best approach to take in setting up a database to manage it. It will also lay the foundation, upon which you CAN learn to use a database application and make it happen.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK to any aspiring database administrator or analyst. There are some typos, but they are minor. This book ROCKS. I know I am repeating myself, but I wish I had found this years ago.

Truly Excellent!

Recently, I finished reading Dr. Harrington's excellent book, "Relational Database Design and Implementation". And I felt the need to share how impressed I am with this book.

Dr. Harrington's book represents a full, yet accessible, treatment of the Relational Model for Database together with practical considerations pertaining to the implementation of relational databases. In this, I would compare her excellent book with two other classics on the subject: Dr. Codd's magisterial "The Relational Model for Database Management, Version 2" and "The Handbook of Relational Database Design" by Fleming and Von Halle. Codd's book, of course, is the masterpiece that ought to be required reading for any person aspiring to a career in modern data administration or database management. Harrington's book, here reviewed, covers much of the important, foundational material treated in much greater depth in Codd's book. And it does so in a very readable and understandable fashion. The reader of both will soon appreciate that Harrington is a teacher by trade, where Codd was a database scientist. In other words, Harrington nicely makes much of the important work covered by Codd accessible to readers who are not necessarily database scientists, but who, perhaps, are simply interested practitioners. "The Handbook of Relational Database Design" by Fleming and Von Halle is truly an emerging classic in the field. Yet, it is now becoming a bit dated. Harrington does not go into the depth of describing a full blown methodology for logical data modeling and relational database design, as did Fleming and Von Halle. But she does deal with current issues of design and implementation in an extraordinarily clear and effective manner.

In summary, I was thrilled and well edified by Dr. Harrington's book. Perhaps the greatest complement I can pay to the esteemed author is that I have purchased and started reading her companion volume, "SQL Clearly Explained". To Dr. Harrington, I can only say: "Bravo"! To other interested readers and reviewers, I can only highly recommend Dr. Harrington's excellent and important book on Relational Database Design and Implementation. God bless.

Very practical

It is easy to find good books about C# and Java. However, for many more specialized development tools it is hard to find a book that provides what a beginner needs. In many cases, a book thoroughly covers the language commands, but leaves the reader staring a a blank command line wondering "What, exactly, do I need to type to compile and run my program?" Bruce Smith's books do not fall into this trap. Smith provides not only the necessary coaching and instruction in assembly language for the Raspberry Pi's ARM processor, but also gives clear practical instructions for getting everything to work.

One of the reasons I bought the book is its introduction to the ARM vector floating-point coprocessor, a topic that often gets short-shrift from authors. If I had to pick one nit with Smith's book, he fails to mention a little trap with assembling coprocessor code. Smith starts the book using the GNU assembler "as" and then moves to using gcc later in the book, which is entirely reasonable. However, some readers might like to know that if you want to assemble vector coprocessor code with "as" rather than gcc you must include the command-line parameter "-mfpu=vfpv2".

Whether you are looking just to have some fun learning assembly language with your Raspberry PI or whether you view the PI as a stepping-stone to greater things ARM, Bruce Smith's book definitely belongs on your shelf.

I'm totally new to Raspberry Pi, Linix, and to Arm processors. This book is clearly written with easy to follow examples. I'm up to chapter 12 so far.

I bought the kindle edition and am reading it on my IPad. The formatting, pictures, and text flow are all superb.

The authors of the chapters are well-established authorities in hepatology who bring diverse expertise to the work, including substantial experience in pathology, infectious disease, diagnostic methodologies and therapy. The result is a book that, despite its complexity , is easy to read and understand.

The nice figures, tables and charts allow a quick and easy interpretation of the concepts it offers to readers. I especially appreciated how easy it was to find the different items of information I need in my everyday activity as a hepatologist.

A Wonderful Hepatology Reference Book

This book is intended to resident physicians and fellows in the hepatology/gastroenterology field. I read the chapters related to the liver transplant operation and its complications, and all I can say that this book is stuning. well supported with charts, figures and illustrations to facilitate the learning experience. text is very well constructed and easto read. the medical content meets the expectations for fellows and training physicians in the field. I personally know the authors, and had a wonderful training experience with them on the medical ward. Finally, this is A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED book for every one interested in the hepatology sience/ experience.

OK as a textbook but not suitable as a reference text

Concise and superbly illustrated, this textbook will serve well as an introduction to Hepatology for GI fellows, internists and non-hepatologists. A busy practitioner will probably find pathophysiology sections too lengthy and will be better served by a "practical approach" type text. An established hepatologist will certainly enjoy a wealth of full-color photographic material and an easy access to basic information about conditions rarely seen in clinical practice. However, information in commonly encountered areas is simply too short to add anything new and a discussion about management controversies is tangential at best. The text is not referenced, rather "further reading" suggestions are given at the end of each chapter. The book is therefore "comprehensive" in scope but not in detail. Most hepatologists, especially academic ones, will be better served by any of 2-volume texts.

Merz does it again.

The 6th full length novel in the Lawson Vampire series delivers all the fun and excitement of the previous and more. Lawson has become one of my favorite heroes to read, with his sarcasm, nobility and never surrender attitude. The combat scenes are vivid and believable, both when Merz discribes unarmed and armed combat. The author, a martial artist, is able to relay the true sense of down and dirty fighting. Not the clean sports one sees on T.V. but the type of fight were both combantants know that in the end, one will be dead.
The supporting cast are just as important as Lawson himself and you feel you know them as well, not just props for Lawson to react to. Giles has grown from someone I disliked origanally into a charracter I enjoy.
Each book in this series just keep getting better and better. I await the next installment, as well as the short stories he provides to fill the time between.

Another Ripping Good Tale

I got an early look at The Ripper and was very pleased with the story, another winner in the Lawson Vampire story. It starts off with plenty of action and the suspense and danger continue throughout the book. Centered in Boston, Lawson and friends once again face another formidable villain, and dark secrets of the past are revealed. You'll also learn more intriguing details about vampiric society. Highly recommended!

Novel 6 is nothing short of brilliant!

I was one of the lucky ones to end up being able to view an advanced copy of The Ripper. This is the 6th novel in the Lawson Vampire series. Of course there are also novellas and short stores to accompany these too! After reading all of Jon's work I have to compare him to wine - he only gets better with age. He has always been good but he continues to outdo himself. If I could give this more than 5 stars I would!

The Ripper takes Lawson on a thrilling adventure where he never knows who did what or where they came from. It is a non-stop and action packed (yes I know sounds cliché... but it really is!) I had to remind myself to breath a few times. This story not only captivated me but it left me hungry for more! I would like to say more but I am afraid I might spoil it.

I really liked that The Ripper also gave us some deeper understanding of all of the supporting characters in this series. I was with Lawson all the way sharing in each of his struggles and all of his laughs.

For anyone who knows me or my reviews you must know also that I cried a few times too. I can't help it I have a soft spot for Lawson and I am very much attached to this series. If I were a Vampire (because obviously they are real) I could hope to be half as bad-ass and loving as Lawson is!

Really I cannot say enough good things about this novel. You just have to read it! You can read it as a standalone however, I really suggest starting from book 1 and going through all the novels, novellas and short stories. They range from FREE to 9.99 which the majority of them 2.99-3.99 - a very good deal for such enjoyable reads.

Oh and I also must say you should get to know Jon. He is a wonderful guy. He is very intelligent, creative, and sincere. He loves his fans and it shows! He has a website/blog/twitter/g+/FB and he manages them himself.

Lastly, while I love them all, my top three picks of Jon's are currently: The Ripper, The Kinsei, and PARALLAX (not from the Lawson series.)

About the Author
David Mechanic, Ph.D. is the René Dubos University Professor of Behavioral Sciences and Director of the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research at Rutgers University. He holds faculty appointments in the School of Social Work and in the departments of sociology, psychology and psychiatry. Over the past 50 years he has taught undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students about mental health policy issues and carried out numerous research studies on mental health issues. He also has served on many national and international policy committees on issues covered in this book. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine Mechanic also received many awards including the Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health from the Institute of Medicine, the Benjamin Rush Award from the American Psychiatric Association, the Distinguished Career Award for the Practice of Sociology from the American Sociological Association, and two major mental health awards from the American Public Health Association. Among his many government assignments, he was coordinator of the Panel on Problems, Scope and Boundaries of the President’s Commission on Mental Health

Donna D. McAlpine, PhD., is an Associate Professor of Public Health in the Division of Health Services Research & Policy at the University of Minnesota where she is the director of the MPH program in Public Health Administration and Policy. She received her doctorate in sociology from Rutgers University with a focus on medical sociology. She teaches graduate courses in community mental health and medical sociology. Her research focuses on patterns of treatment for persons with mental health and substance use problems, race and ethnic disparities in health, and survey methods. Over the past several years she has also been actively involved in partnering with community agencies in building capacity to do community-based participatory research

David A. Rochefort, Ph.D., is Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Northeastern University where he teaches courses on U.S. Health and Welfare Policy, Public Policy Analysis, Political Language, and Quantitative Techniques. At Northeastern, he has received both the Excellence-in-Teaching Award and the Practice-Oriented Education Award. In addition, he was Beverly Visiting professor, The Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, and Fulbright Scholar at the University of Montreal. In 1986-87, he was an NIMH postdoctoral fellow in the Rutgers-Princeton Program in Mental Health Research. Rochefort’s previous publications on mental health include From Poorhouses to Homeless: Policy Analysis and Mental Health Care, 2nd ed. (1997) and editor of Handbook on Mental Health Policy in the United States (1989). He has served as consultant to the Rhode Island Department of Health, New Jersey Department of Human Services, Human Services Research Institute, Regional Office of Inspector General-U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and other groups. He was also the recipient of the President’s Outstanding Service Award, Mental Health Association of Rhode Island
