good textbook for teaching both nonmajors and majors in biology

As a profesor, I use this book in my nonmajors Biology and Society class where it functions well to introduce nonscientist to interesting aspects of biotechnology and the important issues surrounding the science. I also use it in my upper-level genetics class where it works as a nice introduction to biotechnology (and review, in some cases) allowing us to delve deeper into the science and issues using assigned papers. I like it a lot, as do my students; and compared with most textbooks it doesn't cost much. I wish it had more color photographs.

How to find a job and make money in biotechnology

The focus of this book is what kinds of jobs and products can be found in the area of applied biology. The science and technology part is found in most of the modern biology texts, but what is lacking is a sense of how to apply that understanding to create new products and solve human problems.

This book is a little pricey and if you are only interested in the science and technology aspect you will be better served by buying a paperback edition of one of the better introductory biology texts. The price of several of the paperback intros to biology are less than this book, have many color plates and in depth coverage more three times the length of this book.

It's that focus on jobs and products that provides the justification for publishing this book. Hopefully it will provoke the authors of the major intro to biology texts to provide more material on where their students can later go for employment and how they can, by giving examples, go on to create products that improve the human condition.

If the reader emerges from their encounter with this book by thinking with an employment and products mindset towards the science and technology of biology than it will have fulfilled (in my mind) what appears to be it purpose.

Quality, engaging middle-grades book with history and mystery

I absolutely adore Kate Messner's writing. I really enjoyed EYE OF THE STORM and CAPTURE THE FLAG was no disappointment either. One of the things I like most about Kate Messner's books is that she writes smart, honest, real characters. In this book they read, they write, one is a genius at video games, but they all have many layers to their characters without getting overly emotionally involved as would happen in more young adult books. Her cast of characters is also multicultural allowing more kids to relate to the teens they're reading about in the books. I also appreciate that although there is a main female character, there are two male characters in prominent roles also, so there is gender-neutral appeal to this book.

Another great thing about her books is the cross-curricular connections she makes. Especially in CAPTURE THE FLAG where there are many social studies/history ties to be made. In this book she has written a multilayered story with an intriguing mystery. I figured it out early on, but it is written for 3rd-7th graders, and I think it will appeal to them-especially if they're fans of heist stories. It's a fun story as the group is stuck overnight in an airport and as the kids band together to try to find the stolen flag, scene after scene builds up tension and humor as they find their way into all sorts of hidden places within the airport. It also has an exciting secret society aspect to it. I could see this turning into a great series. I know there's a sequel, but I hope there will be more than just one more book in this series. These could be characters who could solve these National Treasure (the movie) type mysteries in all different kinds of situations and meet other members of the society.

Kate Messner just has great writing. There are wonderful descriptions of things and exciting scenes/action, but still written at a level that middle schoolers will easily understand. CAPTURE THE FLAG has a great title and cover design sure to appeal to the intended audience. If you haven't read a Kate Messner book yet, and you're interested in middle grades books, I encourage you to do so soon, and CAPTURE THE FLAG would be a great start!

Great Classroom Read-Aloud

What do I like so much about Capture the Flag? I personally find history fascinating, but I have a hard time selling "historical fiction" to most of our elementary school students. It seems dry and distant to them, and they have a hard time connecting to events in our past. Capture the Flag is a fast-paced mystery/adventure, set in contemporary time, but it includes historical details. These details will tie in with what students are studying in the classroom, and stir their interest in American history.

The characters are believable middle school students (not sugary sweet, not juvenile delinquents) who find themselves in the midst of an intriguing crime. Someone has stolen the original Star Spangled Banner flag from the Smithsonian, and the three students are snowed in at a Washington, D.C. airport with the criminals and other interesting travelers. It's like the National Treasure movies, but with kids instead of adults solving the puzzle. I found that it was written at the right level for students to figure out the mystery at the same pace that the characters do, and to feel clever as they make those inferences.

Fourth and fifth grade teachers at our school have been reading this book aloud to our students and thoroughly enjoying it. If you are a teacher or librarian, consider buying Capture the Flag to encourage your students' interest in history!

A Masterful Mystery for Middle School Readers!

Kate Messner has done it again! She has written a brilliant, high-interest, middle grade mystery that will have middle schoolers turning the pages. Unlike Eye of the Storm, Sugar and Ice, and The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z., this novel is a mystery with tidbits of interesting American history sprinkled throughout from start to finish. Like the others, this novel will keep the young reader's attention until the final pages.

Three believable youngsters, named Anna, Henry, and Jose, meet up at the Washington, DC airport after attending a gala at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. After becoming acquaintances, the kids learn that the original American flag (inspired The Star Spangled Banner) was stolen during the gala. With some persuading, Anna talks Henry and Jose into an adventure to uncover the truth about the heist of this American gem of an artifact. Along the way, the kids begin to learn about each other and form a friendship that will lead them to protect each other at any and all costs.

The young reader will be thrilled to find out that Messner's resolution leaves the possibility for another adventure, a sequel, which will surely be another page-turner. As a middle school teacher, this is one book that I can't wait to put into the hands of a sixth and seventh grader.

About the Author
Scott Bellini is the Director of the Social Skills Research Clinic (SSRC), a university based center specializing in developing and empirically examining the outcomes of social skill interventions for youth with ASD. He is also a faculty member in the School Psychology program at Indiana University, Bloomington, a licensed psychologist in the state of Indiana, and an endorsed Health Services Provider in Psychology. He is currently conducting research on professional development outcomes for educators, anxiety disorders, and social skill interventions, including video modeling for youth on the autism spectrum. Dr. Bellini has published numerous research manuscripts and have provided consultation and training to families and professionals in over 35 states on the topic of social skills programming for students with ASD. He is the the author of the book, Building Social Relationships, which was named the Literary Work of the Year by the Autism Society of America, and Building Social Relationships 2, which was released in March of 2016. He currently lives in Bloomington, IN with his wife, Kelly and sons, Zachary, Addison, and Easton.

I'm an SLP working with children on the autism spectrum. This book is very helpful in focusing on goals needed for building social relationships. It helps me organize what the kids need into a hierarchy and gives practical ideas for working on the skills.

An excellent book for teachers, school psychologists, and parents

As a professor of educational psychology, I have looked for a way of showing my students (at Central Michigan University) how to work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. As the rate of those identified climbs, it is an almost certainty that general education teachers will have several students in their classes with ASD, and this book is a practical way of giving them the tools they need to understand a very effective method of working with those children to acquire the tools to interact with more typical students and in the social situations of everyday life. This book is written clearly, in an authoratative but user-friendly voice, and a plethora of resources are available not only to special ed. teachers, but to all stakeholders. Dr. Bellini has done the education community a major service, and this book is a terrific tool to bring understanding to what can be a challenging situation. I cannot recommend this book more highly.

Very helpful and postive

This book is very helpful and positive. I really like books that are positive, and that tell you about solutions to problems.

As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I know that if there had been books like this 30 years ago, I would have learned much earlier in life what things are appropriate to do and say in what situation. It's too bad that there were no books like this until very recent years!

Kick-Ass Collection of James' other books

I already own most if not all of these books on my Kindle, and have applied the info inside. I like the print version of this book so much that I gave it away to a friend, because it had such useful practical life changing information in it, that James explained in words better than I could.

Of all his books, I think The Ultimate Self Help Manual and Beyond Belief http://www.amazon.com/BEYOND-BELIEF-ultimate-instructional-manual/dp/1921787171 are his best works.

I'll have to buy another copy of the print version.

If there is one thing that James does well in all his books, it's demystifying the mystical. Taking esoteric ideas and concepts, and telling you in simple language, in a step by step manner how to make use of the greatest tool you will ever possess, and neglect every day - your own mind.

Most of us never reach our potential in our lives. Why? Because we are programmed from birth for mediocrity, to aim low. Those who do succeed at anything worthwhile, are the ones who master their own mind, who learn to flow with life, rather than resist and fight and struggle.

This book is great value for money in my view. Beats the hell out of other waffly self-help books that go on and on and barely give you anything useful.

James wastes no words, each book is short and sweet, and full of easy to understand and apply actionable elements than can and DO WORK.

It takes effort and discipline, like anything worthwhile in life, but once applied, you will see your life radically transform as you unlock the keys to your own mind.

Worth reading

it was a good introduction to mr coyles work and a teaser for his best book in my opinion Beyond Belief .Had I read Self Help first I would not be giving it 4 stars but it did not have as much onfo as Beyond Belief which I have read 3 times and plan on reading several more times.I still believe this book is worth reading and does have good info.

Powerful, and Meaningful Self Help

After having read James previous book on the subject of self improvement 'Beyond Belief' I knew I'd have to get his latest. It does not disappoint! Unlike so many other dry self help books that simply tell you what you should do, James relates many personal stories and anecdotes that are relevant, in every chapter.

I personally found the chapter on using visualization to achieve goals while in alpha to be brilliantly explained, and there is an important twist to this technique revealed, that is worth the price of the book in itself!

If you are interested in the power of your own mind, and find much of what is written on the subject to be either too polyannish on the one hand, or too formulaic on the other, then this is the book for you..this makes a great companion to 'Beyond Belief' written by the same author..well done!
