While I don't recommend paying more than $40 or $50
for this book compiled by copywriting uber-mensch
Lewis, it's as good as the other 2 or 3 books in the
category.

Buy the ones you can get by Hatch and Hodgeson,
and pick this one up someday.

There's a book by Harlan Kilstein of his own internet
sales letters that is pretty good and another one
called "Hall of Fame" published by AWAI that can
be had for very little money. All mentioned books
are swipe-files for good sales letters.

This reads to me like the product of a second-rate publishing house that feels ...

I'll agree with those who say this was not well edited--and I don't mean proofreading. I mean organizing for clarity, efficiency, and consistency. This reads to me like the product of a second-rate publishing house that feels a need to cover trendy topics, recruits people who may be knowledgeable but are neither well known nor accomplished writers, gives them formulaic outlines that call for gimmicky sidebars and chatty asides, and imposes short deadlines. Then they fix most of the spelling errors, slop the text for each chapter into various ill-thought-out and repetitive sections, and call it good. I'm on page 3 of the hashing chapter and I've already been told four times that hashing is not reversible.

You can definitely learn from this book. I don't mean that the information is wrong. But the construction is so sloppy that I resent reading it. And I blame the publisher more than the writer. I bet the author gave McGraw Hill just what they asked for.

Worth purchasing!

I believe it is important to add a quick disclosure that I am not in the IT field and my review is based on my personal interest on Cryptography.

The title caught my attention, but I was hesitant and intimidated to purchase the book because I thought the content would be too complex for me to comprehend. After reading the description and several sample pages from the Kindle version, I went ahead and purchased the book. Needless to say, I believe the book is tailored for those who find the topic of Cryptography of interest and those new in the field of IT and security.

At every turn, terminologies were explicitly defined. The author continues to reiterate the importance of these terms through the use of the highlighted Lingo box. I appreciate how a complex subject matter was streamlined into simplistic form that non-IT readers, such as myself can grasp and appreciate. Throughout the book, the author included In My Humble Opinion, an incorporation of his personal and professional views regarding the section discussed. In addition, the inclusion of brief side notes (In Actual Practice), assist the readers to relate the content covered to major historical events and its current application to modern technology. The author’s choice to include such stories facilitates the reader to appreciate the clear connection between theory and practice.

There were a few errors in the book (as mentioned by a previous reviewer), along with the author’s choice of reusing several exact materials from the first chapter into the second. I found this a little confusing. If selected materials were essential, the author could restate them again in a different way. Although the book contained minor errors (as with any books published – I have yet to read a book free of errors), they were not a significant hindrance to the flow and its objective.

Overall, I recommend this book for those who find the topic of interest. The simplicity and clarity of the content, coupled with fun cryptography puzzles captured and retained the attention of this non-IT reader.

About the Author
Jennifer George is the granddaughter of Rube Goldberg. She is a writer and a jewelry and clothing designer. For almost twenty years her label was carried at Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and dozens of other specialty stores across the U.S. She lives in New York City.

Adam Gopnik,staff writer for the New Yorker, is a three-time National Magazine Award winner and author of many books, including Paris to the Moon and Through the Children’s Gate.

Andrew Baron of Popyrus Studio, Inc. came to the world of paper engineering following years as a restorer of antique phonographs, clocks, and other mechanical wonders. His books have won international awards, including the Movable Book Society’s Meggendorfer Prize.

Inventive Cartoon Genius

Rube Goldberg was born in 1883 during the golden age of invention, just eight years after Bell patented his telephone and five years after Edison filed his first light bulb patent. A flood of new machines were developed and commercialized during his youth, and while he produced a wide range of comic art throughout his long career, he's most famous for lampooning our modern fascination with mechanical contraptions.

Goldberg started drawing as a young child, grew up to study and work as an engineer, and then combined his love of art and technology, keeping at it with such a consistently witty flair that his name became a household word. More than a humorist, his political cartoons won him both a Pulitzer Prize and such enmity during World War II that he asked his sons to change their family name to George for their own protection. He also wrote a feature film for the Three Stooges and later became an accomplished sculptor. A frequent visitor to the White House, he continued working nearly nonstop until his death in 1970 at the age of 87.

This big, wide, full-color book (more than twice the size of a thick hardcover) allows Goldberg's granddaughter Jennifer and six other authors, including Al Jaffee of Mad Magazine fame, to present the man's prolific output in all its glorious variety. The cover itself is a cartoon animated by the swipe of a finger, and the Rube Goldberg device that drives this animation is visible through a plastic window on the back of the cover.

Inside are hundreds of illustrations: elaborate but pointless contrivances, tools like pen nibs and drawing tables, photos of the artist at work and play, juvenilia and early work, political cartoons and sculptures, magazine and book covers, letters and family snapshots, advertisements and patents, awards and honors. Seven long essays contain personal reflection, professional appreciation, aesthetic analysis, and historical context. Sidebars present details about his animated cartoons, his wife Irma, and his comic strip and panel series like "Foolish Questions," "The Boob Family," "Boob McNutt," "Mike & Ike -- They Look Alike," "The Weekly Meeting of the Tuesday Ladies Club," "Lala Palooza," "Old Man Alf," "Bertha, the Siberian Cheesehound," and many more.

This book is a cluttered, insanely detailed delight that everyone, adults and children alike, will want to spend hours or days perusing. It stands as the definitive introduction and testament to the genius of Rube Goldberg.

The complete Rube

This large landscape book is an affectionate and wonderful celebration of Goldburg's art with several dozen examples of his cartoon inventions but there was much more to him than that. As well being a cartoonist he produced comedy shorts, wrote newspaper columns, did some screen writing for Twentieth Century Fox, starred in his own TV show, drew editorial cartoons and when he retired in 1964 took up sculpture. The first comic strip, in 1908, was called 'They all look good when they're far away', the crazy invention cartoons started in 1912 and by 1915 his work appeared in newspapers all over America. During the Forties he did more political editorial cartoons and I thought his style was rather similar to the Washington Post's Herblock especially in the use of a textured tone to show depth. He's quoted on page 169 saying "Political cartoons were easier for me than the inventions because they were almost pure idea, and the draftsmanship relatively simple".

Goldberg's delightful invention cartoons frequently had an inspired extra panel, bottom right, sometimes called Foolish Questions where he allowed his offbeat sense of humour to flow. For example on the invention drawing for May 14, 1929 is Foolish Question, number 47,389,100 showing a couple in bed with the word 'meow' in the window frame, she says "Is that a cat?"- he says "No, it's a mule giving an imitation of a mocking bird". Foolish Questions was, in fact, his first real cartoon hit when it started as a single panel in 1908, five hundred were created between 1908 and 1910 and book reprints soon followed.

Rube Goldberg was famous enough to have his name used as an adjective in Merriam-Webster's dictionary and exactly the same thing happened to Heath Robinson (1872-1944) a British artist who also drew comic inventions though his work was featured in magazines rather than newspapers. The Shorter Oxford Dictionary carries his name under H. Both names are used when refering to a complex devise that solves a simple task.

The book is a treat to look through, the 194 pages probably contain a few hundred graphic items, obviously most are cartoon art but also historical photos and bits of historical ephemera and near the back ads that Goldburg either did the art for or appeared in as celebrity endorsements, book jackets he designed, photos of his sculpture, family Christmas cards and more. All of this is beautifully served up with handsome layouts and typography. A nice touch, I thought, was printing the older cartoons in sepia , sometimes on light sepia pages (all the sepia is four colour created).

Seven writers contribute all you really need to know about Rube, his granddaughter writes a sweet essay about him and I liked Peter Maresca's piece placing Goldberg in the context of American newspaper comics. With the wonderful art, essays and nor forgetting the fun hands-on front cover (your finger controls a tab that moves nine items at once) there will not be a better (looking) book about America's favourite cartoonist.

This book taught me a lot about how I think.

Ronald Gross clearly knows what he is writing
about, and has the ability to write about it in
ways that anyone can understand.
I learned more about the way I and others learn
from this book than in numerous psychology classes.
But the one thing that I got from this book is an enthusiasm for learning. The basic premise being
that you do not have to go to university to get a degree, but rather that you have the choice of what and how you will learn. Your University of the World, makes you just as educated as any degree. This jewel should be embraced by everyone.
My only disappointment with this book is that it is of uneven quality. Some of the explanations and exercises are excellent insights into the human mind. Others appear to be withour merit and without explanation.

in this primer for new students but the condescending tone
grated on my nerves. Obviously the editor
of the book failed to use Gross's theories
since the editing is not up to snuff.

Impressively solid YA

You can compare Falcon Quinn to Harry Potter, and you will. But it's not a knockoff. Boylan's off-kilter writing style and her eye for amusing and engaging characters brought me into the story from the very first line. The pacing of the story was a little jumpy early on, but the book quickly settles into a smooth flow and the pages sail by.

Falcon as a character is not unusual, which is the point. He feels like the decent-hearted struggling kid you probably knew in school, or possibly WERE in school. What's enjoyable about him is that right from the outset, he's TRYING to do right. His mistakes are as interesting as his successes, and he reaches only normal teenage levels of emo rather than bipolar bogglement. His friends Max, Megan, Pearl, Johnny and the rest are great fun in their own right. The dialog is the kind I can hardly resist reading out loud, both because it's well-written and funny, but also because I can hear each character's voice so clearly in my own head.

The plot is entertaining as well. It rolls along, rarely in a straight line, but always going somewhere new and...well, FUN! Though you can probably deduce where the story will wind up, this is a book about the trip and not the finish line. And the trip is worth taking.

Finally, the theme. I liked that it's more questions than answers. While it's clear Boylan has ideas about what the answers are, she does less pushing than some inferior YA authors do. What makes someone a monster? What is acceptance worth? Ultimately, how much do I have to make way for the world and how much must the world make way for me? A bad author tells. A good one asks.

The story does cover the age-old YA theme of finding out what makes you special and worthy, but to say that's a Harry Potter trope does disservice to the MANY books on this theme that have come before and after. Narnia, anyone?

Similarly, the setting ("special" children learning to manage their powers) is also very well-traveled ground. Diana Wynne-Jones, Tamora Pierce, Andre Norton and many others have written on it, and that's just off the top of my head and not mentioning the X-Men. Certain ideas are WORTH revisiting.

Falcon Quinn and the Black Mirror is a quick, enjoyable read with memorable characters and dialog. I'm not typically a series-reader, but I'm very much hoping for a sequel.

I think this is the best book ever, I have read it 3 times and I wish she was a more well known author, I think this book is not getting the attecine that it deserves. I can not wait for book 2!!!

Of A Genre

Jennifer Finney Boylan began by appearing to have borrowed from the Hobbit-Harry Potter-Maximum Ride genre, in that it involves a society that exists only in imagination. In fact, it begins very much like Harry Potter, with children who are somehow "different" being transported by a magic bus to a school for such unusual people and going through a similar sorting process to discover the exact nature of their "difference."

Then it goes in another direction. Each main character, along with their schoolmates, begin to morph, physically, into the type of "monster" they have been diagnosed to be, and now they must discover how to fit into the world as entirely different creatures from those they have known, and into a society that routinely rejects anyone who doesn't conform to arbitrary norms.

I have begun reading many books and then putting them down after a few chapters, never to cross my eyes again. Others languish on my end table, being read whenever I had nothing else to do. Not so with Falcon Quinn and The Dark Mirror. I began reading on Friday evening, and by Saturday afternoon I had finished all 486 pages. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
