Written concisely, it recounts major events/rulers in Russian history, putting them in perspective with regards to European history and, at least for me, clarifying some confusing areas (e.g. "The Time Of Troubles"). As a history major in college, I studied Russian history, but had forgotten many details. Was most pleased to discover this atlas and the easy-to-follow, refresher course it provided. Atlas is written in a reader-friendly fashion, easy to pick up after an interruption, and I expect it would be as interesting to a first time student of Russian history as it was to me.

outstanding work

This is a spectacular book. The historical coverage is broad and reasonably deep; the illustrations and explanatory sidebars are fun and well constructed; and the maps are a wonderful complement to the text. It was just so complete! Glorious period photos on every page: Trotsky, Stalin, Lenin, Alexander II. Stunning works of medieval and modern art. Unfortunately, the trailing atlas-style section was a bit weaker than the rest of the book, even if the photos were excellent. Albeit, I still think the photographic characterization of Moscow was trite: enough photos of the Kremlin and St. Basil's!

The information presented in this book is fabulous. I love the pictures as well. It's a great coffee table book if you just want to leave it out. And it looks great on a book shelf as well. However, as another reviewer already noted, the binding on this book is horrendous. Just taking it out of the shipping box and reading the first couple of pages was too much for it to handle. The cover is already nearly ripped from the book, and the individual pages are all falling out. I tried putting it back together with some glue, but it didn't work. It just keeps coming apart. It seems deplorable to charge so much for a book that will not even withstand a single reading. For this reason, I gave the book five stars for the info, but no stars for the construction. I split the difference and came up with the 3 star rating.

In short, if you just want the info and don't care how the book looks after your reading- go for it. But, if you're like me, and prefer your books to be in good, presentable shape, then no dice. It's just not worth it.

About the Author

Jon Kieffer (MEF-CECP 2.0) is a technical writer working for Fujitsu Network Communications since 2001. Jon (with Ralph Santitoro) coauthored Fujitsu's MEF-CECP 2.0 Exam Study Guide for Carrier Ethernet 2.0 Professionals. Jon holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering and has authored 12 journal articles in the fields of mechanical and controls engineering. Before joining Fujitsu, Jon taught Engineering at the University of Hull in the U.K. and at the Australian National University.

Yongchao Fan (CCIE R&S #6369) is a product support engineer working for Fujitsu Network Communications since 1999 and previously worked for IBM as a global services engineer. Yongchao holds BS and MS degrees in computer science and has extensive experience with various networking technologies and real-world networks.

I recommend reading this either before or after the more advanced text, depending on your learning process. Before, if you need an initial organizational framework to introduce the CE concepts. After, if you want to make a global sense of where the details fit in the big picture as well as what the details are meant to address.

Tanning the Healthy Way

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author's sense of humour prevailed throughout the entire book. It was her wonderful style that helped to get the message across.......do it naturally! The topic is very relevant since we all know the danger of excessive sun exposure. The book proves that you don't need the sun to have a healthy looking glow. There should be more books like this that demonstrate natural ways of achieving your goals. Keep up the good work!

He has more than a decade's experience with a broad range of object-oriented languages, including C++, Smalltalk, Eiffel, and Modula-2, and is a well-known instructor for the University of California Berkeley Extension program, very popular for his depth of knowledge and natural flair for teaching. EXCELLENT C++/OOP book

This book is super easy to read compared to every other prog/tech book I've ever read...(well maybe aside from Petzold). It feels like a lot of attention/effort was given to patiently and thoroughly cover each topic. And consequently it's worth every penny.
The emphasis is on solving reasonable real world problems with solid OOP techniques. The author's evaluation of several different possible solutions for each problem really helps to show you not just the 'how's but the 'why's of what makes good design. Unlike the last sentence, this book is EXTREMELY clearly written :-).
In a nutshell, this book is like a master's guide to the holy grail of expert C++ development. Loved it!

Great for someone with C experience, looking to learn C++

I picked up the book with a basic foundation in C programming in a professional Win32 environment, and was looking to expand my knowledge of C++. I never had any formal training in C++, and was able to grasp all of the concepts presented. After reading I was able to quickly pick up and understand ATL and MFC with little trouble at all.
This book is great for those "theory" people who want to understand how to use the language, not just copy and paste code from a book.
I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who has no experience with C or C++. A basic understanding of C is a minimum requirement.

Shoot the proof-reader

A good book that is marred by a couple of things... 1. The presentation and print quality are absolutely terrible. 2. There are NUMEROUS bugs in the example code. Still, better than most of the books I've read, proving useful to both beginners and more experienced coders.
