Fun for the Family

We ordered this as a gift to our children from their "Elf." I love how it walks through every step of Jesus's coming and birth, including the prophecies the lead up to the miraculous event. The kids really enjoyed shouting out the special phrase for each lessons, as well as placing the stickers in the appropriate place on the poster. I highly recommend this Advent Calendar to people with young children who want to focus on Jesus and the true reason for Christmas.

Great Family Advent Devotion Book

This is a great Advent book for families with young children and elementary age children. There are daily devotions, activity suggestions, and puzzles. There is also a poster Advent calendar with a new sticker for each day. It is easy to use the Advent calendar and devotions in a way that fits well with your children's ages and interests.

I used this book as a daily Advent devotion with my 6 year old daughter during the month of December. We both enjoyed it very much! My daughter's favorite part was the Advent calendar poster that went on the wall. She had fun finding the placing a new sticker on the poster each day as we counted down the days until Christmas.

This advent calendar is great!

This advent calendar is great! It has an easy to follow parent's guide with suggestions for younger and older children plus engaging poster, stickers and puzzles/activities that go along with each day. All while teaching the real reason for the season and helping to center our thoughts on Christ. I totally recommend it! PLUS it can be used for several years if you manipulate the resources correctly. All around a great product from Tyndale and Focus on the Family (they never disappoint!).

For those who equate "emo" with lonely, malnourished rock bands, Alternative Press vets Simon and Kelley provide a vivisection of this deceptively large slice of the American pop culture pie: "it's a state of mind...a place for people who don't fit in-but who long to fit in with other people who don't fit in." With casual prose and unflagging energy, the authors look at a laundry list of emo affairs: fashion, internet, film, literature and music among them. Simon and Kelley know the territory inside and out, profiling ten emo types ("Trustafarian," "Christian," "Ex-Hardcore"), "emo ancestors" (including Emily Dickinson and Cameron Crowe), a detailed timeline and a comparative " 'Emo' vs. 'So Not Emo' " list-and that's just the first chapter. Unexpected resources and sarcastic swipes abound: record store recommendations segue into clever, cutting guidelines for naming your band. Readers will be reminded of Robert Lanham's The Hipster Handbook (right down to Rob Dobi's detailed, comic-realist illustrations), but like that title, Simon and Kelley's may not appeal to its subjects (emo fans read books primarily "to brag about them in social situations"). Simon and Kelley describe emo culture slyly in this perky lifestyle guide. Basically, emo is music made by "a bunch of guys barely out of high school" who are concerned "with decidedly high school problems" (heartbreak, friendship, etc.) more than with "approachable hooks." Growing out of and away from increasingly insular punk rock, emo sets lyrics that are very often introspective and achey. Self-centered, whiny songs and introspective posing have been part of rock from the beginning (e.g., "Tell Laura I Love Her," Jim Morrison's tortured-artist act), but with emo they are the center of a packaged subculture pitched to "the preppiest of preps" being "punkish," "lacrosse jocks" who sing along to "weepy acoustic anthems," and "Long Island dudes" who "keep journals, cry in front of girls, and write the word art with a capital A." Simon and Kelley list movies, songs, fashions, and even eating habits to reveal what is and isn't emo. There's a hint of satire in all this, which seems right, given the arch irony of the emo mind-set. Mike Tribby

This really is the perfect book for anyone looking to know a little more about what it means "to be emo" but its even better for people who already know the scene and just want a good chuckle. The book is a perfect blend of information and comedy, making a nice satirical music book.

sometimes witty, but ultimately too smug

ok, short review. i've been amazed by how the almost-impossible-to-define music genre of emo has proliferated and splintered into dozens of even-more-impossible-to-define subsets and nuances over the past few years. and how emo has become more mainstream, and -- surely -- the haven of the hip white kids. let the truly mainstream have their r&b and hip-hop and top-40. emo, like it's "alternative rock" predecessor, is in the midst of an identity crisis as it's growing popularity is antithetical to its "we're the forgotten" anti-conformity soul.

i admit, i'm a 45 year old dude. i am not allowed to be emo (though it is hilarious that my 14 year-old daughter has recently moved beyond her hip-hop and r&b only musical tastes and raided most of the emo from my itunes, causing a shudder in the generation gap of our household).

i bought this book because i wanted to understand more, and because i thought it looked like fun. and in some ways it provided both. in other ways, it was just too self-effacing and "i'm more hip than you because i make fun of the very affinity group i am part of". a few insights; too many lists of "the right record stores", "the right clothing stores" and such. worth a skim if you're interested in the subject; but not a high recommendation.

I finished this book in 3-4 hours. Totally hilarious! It had me cracking up every couple of pages, and I totally agree with the thing about wearing belts so that the buckle is on the side, rather than the front of your pants. AWESOME!!!

Much more than a sales brochure

The problem with some car books is that they are little more than expanded sales brochures. This one is much more. It has interviews with the engineers and Ford executives involved in creating this car, the problems they faced, and the market conditions. This book makes clear the thinking and rationale that went into the decisions designing this car. The book gives a brief history of the Mustang line, but that is not its main purpose. I was glad to see that it spends many more pages on the development of the 2015 Mustang; I already have several books on the history of the Mustang. There are also plenty of images showing some of the design ideas along the way as the car slowly took shape, and there are many interesting accounts about this process, including the decisions to build a right hand drive model for foreign markets, whether or not to have the V-6 return, and developing independent rear suspension across the line as standard equipment. There is much, much more in this book, but I won't spoil those surprises.

Wish it was even more focused on the '15

I was expecting a book focused on engineering details of the 2015 Mustang. This book includes too much overarching Mustang history and individual perspectives on Mustang, past and present - in my opinion. I wanted more of a book full of Dave Pericak, Kemal Curic and 2015 details, exploded views etc.

Very good book for beginners and beyond

Very good book for beginners and beyond. The book was written in the 80's and updated a few times after that. It is simple and easy to understand. I have (and purchased) a few books that are not clear in teaching the language, but this is a good resource. I have added it to my library of Viet text books that I use to study the language.

Best of a weak list

I bought the recent edition (published December 2011) of this text. I had borrowed a friend's copy of the 1994 edition and, though it is far from a modern, useful language text, it is better any of its competition. Imagine my surprise to find that my "new" edition differs from my friend's only in its cover, the addition of a new fly leaf page with the word Vietnamese misspelled and the reverse of the title page now includes 2012. The rest is absolutely identical. So don't go searching for the new edition if you are hoping for an updated version - the 1994 version has simply been reproduced in identical, rather boring black and white.

I have lived in VN for more than four years and work there as an English language teacher. I have found the language difficult to learn but keep trying as I need to remind myself of the difficulty of what I ask of my students to do every day. I don't have much of "an ear" for languages and don't know how anyone can be expected to learn spoken Vietnamese without the assistance of some audio input but this book comes with no tapes or CD. My friend used hers in a class with a native Vietnamese speaker as her teacher. A common problem with other texts with CDs is that the CDs have been made from old audiotapes and are impossible to start and stop as required.

One strength of this title is that the authors do understand that to use a language a learner needs to know individual words - most Vietnamese texts give idiomatic translations so a learner has difficulty knowing how to use the words in proper context. Another strength is that the lessons are reasonably well graded. And there are useful charts to show sentence and grammatical structures which use a range of interchangeable adjectives or pronouns - as a language teacher I found these very helpful.

But there are criticisms too. The main one is that the book's dialogues are set overseas and feature Vietnamese speaking to other Vietnamese in Australia or USA. It reads almost as if the dialogues were devised from texts to help Vietnamese people living overseas to learn English. I am not sure why, living in Hue as I do, I might want to speak in Vietnamese about San Diego or Los Angeles or Melbourne. And why would I want to say to another Australian: You're an Australian, aren't you? in Vietnamese - I would ask in English. The book does not focus on learning Vietnamese because you are living in Viet Nam - rather it provides an ex-pat Vietnamese view of the language.

A good modern Vietnamese language text is sorely needed. This is not it. But it is the best I have found during a long and futile search. The problems for me are: first, that the text reflects the Confucian learning methods so common in VN rather than the modern communicative language teaching used throughout the English speaking world; and second, that the focus is not on learning Vietnamese so that you can function better in Viet Nam.

disappointing text

I found this text rather disappointing. My Vietnamese teachers, who are both Northern and Southern, pointed many flaws in the dialogues, mixing formal and informal idioms which is inappropriate, the use of idioms that no one else apparently has ever heard of, and a failure to cover important basics. We used the text, but it was really the skill of the teachers that made it workable. This text appears to be supported by various organizations, but I am not sure why, quality does not appear to be the reason.
I have since discovered Ngo's text, which seems much better.

Historical papers on cryp tography done during World War II (Hatch, Hilton, Tutte, Ulfving, and Weierud), mathematical papers on more recent methods in cryptography (Cosgrave, Lomonoco, Wardlaw), and mathematical papers in coding theory (Gao, Joyner, Michael, Shokranian, Shokrollahi). A brief biography of the authors follows. - Peter Hilton is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He worked from 1941 to 1945 in the British cryptanalytic headquarters at Bletchley Park. Profes sor Hilton has done extensive research in algebraic topology and group theory. - William Tutte is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus and an Adjunct Pro fessor in the Combinatorics and Optimization Department at the Univer sity of Waterloo. He worked from 1941 to 1945 in the British cryptana lytic headquarters at Bletchley Park. Professor Tutte has done extensive research in the field of combinatorics.

These are the proceedings of the Conference on Coding Theory, Cryptography, and Number Theory held at the U. S. Naval Academy during October 25-26, 1998. This book concerns elementary and advanced aspects of coding theory and cryptography. The coding theory contributions deal mostly with algebraic coding theory. Some of these papers are expository, whereas others are the result of original research. The emphasis is on geometric Goppa codes (Shokrollahi, Shokranian-Joyner), but there is also a paper on codes arising from combinatorial constructions (Michael). There are both, historical and mathematical papers on cryptography. Several of the contributions on cryptography describe the work done by the British and their allies during World War II to crack the German and Japanese ciphers (Hamer, Hilton, Tutte, Weierud, Urling). Some mathematical aspects of the Enigma rotor machine (Sherman) and more recent research on quantum cryptography (Lomonoco) are described. There are two papers concerned with the RSA cryptosystem and related number-theoretic issues (Wardlaw, Cosgrave).
