Hope in a Bleak Future

Although this is a children's book that will take most adults only minutes to read, THE DRUMMER BOY has a lot to offer.

As the title suggests (and the smaller print states), this is a Christmas tale. It takes place in a not-too-distant future America, where Christmas has been outlawed and replaced by the Holiday. Daniel, a young boy who has never heard of Christmas, finds an old drum with a poem and a story inside. What follows will touch the hearts of Christian readers and gently prod our consciences, reminding us that each one of us has a part to play and the only qualification is willingness.

This book is an excellent choice for Christmas morning reading, when the family is gathered together around the fireplace and you want that one small reminder about the real reason we celebrate Christmas.

This is a MUST READ!!

Ted Dekker has taken a timeless story, and brought it up to the possible 21st Century. Set in a world that views the Christmas story as nothing more than a dangerous myth, one small child dares to make a stand. It was an inspirational read, and you will love it. Great for Christmas or any other time of year.

Great Read-Aloud Book For Families

I read this aloud to my two nephews, ages 11 and 13, over several days leading up to Christmas, and they loved it. They liked the fact that it happens in the future (even though it's not a "high-tech" future, as they had first hoped), and they identified with the main character (a 10-year-old boy). It also got them thinking about the real meaning of Christmas, whether or not that's important to them, and whether they'd take a stand to defend it. One of them told me that he never really liked the song "The Little Drummer Boy," but after hearing this story, different images came to mind, and he was starting to like the song. (The occasional illustrations in the book are wonderful.) Finding books that they think are "cool" at this age can be a challenge, so I was so glad it went over well. I'd highly recommend it!

4.5 stars because it needs an editor - or at least a beta reader

I bought this because it showed up in my recommended list. The only other review at the time said nothing of value, I had never heard of the author, and it was more pricey than I usually risk on an unknown. I am so glad I took the risk.

This is a serial, but the first installment is a whole book, with a beginning, middle and end - plus the cliffhanger, so that made me happy as most authors lately have been writing and releasing pieces of a book.

Elle is in hiding, but her next door neighbor is relentless in his pursuit of her. She is emotionally damaged, but that doesn't stop him. Her character is one of the best drawn characters I have seen in a while. She feels real - she smokes, drinks, swears, loves, hates and is at peace with what she has become in order to survive. Ryder is a bit too perfect, but he is also very fully drawn, so you really believe the intense attraction between the 2 of them. Her back story, told through flashbacks, drives the underlying plot that will no doubt drive the adventure in the next book, which I can't wait to read.

The author could use an editor - the book is littered with typos, homonyms, and the concept of how to properly use contractions has for the most part been neglected - your substituted for you're for example - just about every page glaring lack of use of the apostrophe. If you can push that aside, this is well worth the read. I will be on the outlook for the sequel.

Absolutely Amazing!

Wow! I went into this book with not even the slightest idea what it was about. I hadn't even read the synopsis, just jumped right in as it had been gifted to me and I just couldn't let a good book go to waste. Well let me tell you, this book was absolutely amazing and I'm so glad that I jumped on in!

I loved pretty much every aspect of this story and loved how you were kept with very few answers all the way through trying to guess what had happened to cause Elle to be the person she had become. Although you are given snippets all the way throughout the story, you are never really given the exact answers and to me that is what made this book so remarkable.

I did find the book a bit slow to start, however once Elle settles down in North Carolina the story line picks up right away. Once it starts moving you will be completely submerged in this amazing story and left with no choice but to keep on reading until you get to the very last page.

I am floored by the depth of the character that is Elle. The Author has made her into one of the most remarkable characters I have ever read and I just loved reading her story. If you are looking for a female character who is as strong as a bull both inside and out, then look no further because she can be found in Frayed Hope.

Then you have Mr. Ryder. Wow! Now Im not usually one for the man that seems perfect all around as I just don't see it as realistic, but Ryker is perfection to a T and I loved every damn second of it! This man has made me swoon something fierce and I can't wait to get more of him!

I found the story had a great flow to it and had been very well edited. It was a nice clean read and I always enjoy a story that doesn't leave you distracted by editing issues.

The only reason why I am not giving this a 5 star, is because I found that at times there was just too much description given. Although I like enough detail to make me feel like I am part of the story, I found that this was a bit too much for me and left me skimming the page to get back to the actual story. other than that this was a flawless read and the second I closed it I one clicked book #2 and can't wait to start!

Some of those parts had been laughing out loud.
Cant wait to read the next one in this series, I have to know what happens. Matter of fact i went to my kindle unlimited and got the next two in the series to make sure that i see what happens. Cant wait to dig into them

A good reference book, but too big for self-instruction.

A fine reference book for a great price, but it is my second go-to statistics book. If you are looking to teach yourself probability and statistics, I found it much easier to sit down and plow through the more compact work by Ang and Tang, Probability Concepts in Engineering Planning and Design, Vol 1.

A Seminal Work: Required Reading for Civil Engineers!

Much more than an outstanding text on probability and statistics (P&S) in civil engineering practice, it is an amazing work on civil engineering epistemology, including risk and uncertainty, that has no equal in my experience. Reading it through without necessarily focusing on the math details still rewards the reader with fundamental and valuable discussions for conceptual understandings of P&S, risk and uncertainty, including their role in engineering judgment and decision making under uncertainty. Many conceptual and mathematical insights are included in the Illustrations, and Problems, which should not be missed. As subject experts and inspiring engineering teachers, Benjamin & Cornell wrote what is IMO the single best book on “Probability, Statistics, and Decision for Civil Engineers.”

Lacks information

This book would be a good choice in introducing you to mice. But, if you already own mice then it will be of no help to you. It has only the basic information you need to know. Such as feeding, housing, training, and caring for your pet mouse. It has a section about breeding, though it is brief. Also the breeding section is very callous by reccomending that you cull mismarked baby mice from litters. Any respectable breeder would not do this, and sell the mice as pets only. Over all I would say this book is not a good read.

Corny but comprehensive!

Standing out with the irreverently snappy title, "Get Your ACT Together: The Fabulous Guide to the ACT," Applerouth presents its first ACT textbook with a bang. The bright cover features bold colors and smiling Scooby Doo-like cartoon characters. Is it all just a little too cute? Maybe. Is the book any good? Surprisingly perhaps, but yes!

Now that the ACT has surpassed the SAT in absolute number of test takers as more and more states are using it as a graduation requirement or for other standardized assessments, it's high time for the publication of more and better ACT study resources. Until now, students have been limited to the usual suspects - The Princeton Review, Kaplan and Barrons - and the test maker's "The Real ACT Prep Guide." Unlike the College Board's "Official SAT Study Guide" with ten real tests for practice, the ACT people only offer five practice tests. Like the College Board though, the makers of the ACT offer no more than a few pages of instruction in their book, which means that serious students will have to supplement it with a real textbook to guide them in test-taking techniques.

Applerouth seems intent in blowing the roof off the staid and scary atmosphere that infuses most test prep guides. Staid because the material is dry and boring. Scary because, well, these tests count a lot in competitive college admissions. Applerouth's textbook has BIG type, lots of silly cartoon illustrations, corny mnemonic tools to remember key points, and a lot of excess white space. For some, the approach may seem juvenile and the silliness may be off-putting. At its heart, however, is an excellent teaching tool.

The book is organized by test subject: English grammar and rhetorical skills, Math topics, Reading, Science and Essay. Each one consists of a comprehensive approach to the knowledge base needed for the test and, most importantly, techniques to approach the questions. In the reading section, for example, the text introduces "the Sparrow" with a large cartoon of a bird representing the simple, unflashy answer and how to spot it. In the very time-pressured Science section, Applerouth walks students through the techniques of putting your finger on the graph as you find it mentioned in the question, with question and passage texts highlighted and grayed out to demonstrate the reading and skimming process. It's almost like having a tutor by your side to advise you. As a test prep tutor of many years' experience, I was surprised and gratified to see that Applerouth uses many of my favorite techniques, too, and shows students very clearly how to approach the passages and the questions. There are helpful arrows and explanations to all the lesson questions, and smart reminders in the margins, comparable to Barrons' and The Princeton Review's, but much more fun, and thus, memorable.

The book has its flaws, too. For more advanced students, it is probably too basic. Students already scoring above 30 in Math or Science should check out The Princeton Review's "Math and Science Workout for the ACT" or Barron's "ACT Math and Science Workbook." And unlike The Princeton Review, Applerouth does not offer explanations to the answers in the practice tests. Furthermore, this expensive book ($29.95 on Amazon, compared to $13.59 for The Princeton Review's ACT textbook) has only two full practice tests, while The Princeton Review gives two in the textbook plus one extra online and Barron's has three in the book, itself. As a first edition, there are quite a few typos and other annoying errors. Most egregiously, the book inaccurately touts "A World of Online Support" on its inside cover. There is actually no online support at all. Applerouth says they are planning all that, but the promised "More fabulous materials" do not exist; the link on the textbook cover leads to a page promoting their tutoring services. It amounts to shoddy, deceptive advertising and is a major failing on the publisher's part.

On balance, though, this is a fun textbook and for those who don't mind spending a little more, a useful tool in ACT prep that will help most students raise their scores. I'm a convert: I've chucked my old favorite, The Princeton Review, and have now adopted this book as the new companion to "The Real ACT Prep Guide" for my ACT students in New York and around the world. So far, everyone likes it, finds the material engaging, and is picking up points as a result.
