Law and Custom about Sex in the Old Testament

This review is based on the Kindle version of the book, but it will primarily address that content which is common to both the Kindle and the Paper editions.

I suggest that if you are a dedicated Kindle user, there is not a lot with which to be disappointed, except for the list of references to the Bible after the text.The translation from paper to electronic essentially destroyed the usefulness of this table, as what was once primarily in rows, is now in columns, so the page number is below the verse citation. Sometimes, it appears the page number is missing. The index of words seems to suffer from the same problem. This is odd, because I have seen many Kindle books which do not have this problem. Perhaps the translation to e-Book was done by a contractor working for Yale University Press. If you are not dedicated to the Kindle, these problems mean you should get the paper copy, if possible, at a "used" price.

For the paper edition alone, I would give the book 3 1/2 stars. The title, probably dictated by the publisher, does not accurately represent the subject of the book. The title of my review may be a more apt title. In addition to law and custom, the book also deals with some unusual ideas about the meaning of some things which sound like "Thou shalls", but are actually blessings that "Things will go well."

The subject is appropriate from this author, who seems to be one of those people who were profoundly influenced by a single person, in this case, David Dube, recently passed away, who was the leading scholar of Hebrew and ancient middle eastern law. Dr. Carmichael was one of his many students, and has recently published an edition of Dr. Daube's "Jottings" (probably somethng like Luther's "Table Talk". Sometimes, this work appears to be a commentary on Daube's work.Carmichael also seems to have an affinity to referring to works by Daube's students, such as C. K. Barrett's commentary on John, in preference to the larger and better known commentary by Raymond Brown.

On the language of the Old Testament, Dr. Carmichael leans in the direction of taking anything in the Deuteronomic history which does not agree with our understanding should be taken as myth. Just to be sure, I quote from the introduction "... myth in the form of an explanation and often justification of some event, real or imagined, characterizes most biblical material where a different vision for understanding the world from ours prevails..." This is just a bit hard to swallow. To elaborate on the idea, Carmichael shows how some rather important laws dealing with sexual behavior in the Torah were written the way they were in order to be consistant with the legends we find in Genesis.

And since, as he also says, citing Dr. Daube, "We immediately encounter a surprise. Both Judaism and Christianity traditionally view the text in Genesis 1:28 as laying down a duty to procreate, and even modern scholars take its words to be a commandment. But, as David Daube observed, the words do not in fact command. Rather, the full text of the passage constitutes a blessing: "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply."

So what are we to make of a discussion which says "law like starements" are actually blessings, or explanations of myth. Dr. Campbell redeems himself by being more careful and circumspect when he deals with individual situations. There is much that he says which ranges from probably right to certainly provocative.

While much of the book deals with the Old Testament, the first two chapters deal with some facinating interpretations of two incidents in the Gospel of John, the wedding at Cana and Jesus with the Samaritan woman at the well.He claims both events are connected to stages in the Genesis story of creation. The marriage at Cana represents the third day of creation and the incident at the well represents a sexual encounter, comparable to day six of the Genesis story. Carmichael's arguments are cogent, but in such a carefully structured Gospel, why do only these episodes seem to line up with Genesis (on the other hand, the working theory on John is that it was built up by several different hands, through several revisions.

By far my favorite claim in the book is the parallel between the search for wisdom and sexual desire. Carmichael says "the search for wisdom is the pursuit of an attractive woman whose qualities, while the opposite of those of a loose woman, are yet similar-- imitation par opposition..." Understanding the equating wisdom with a woman is quite old. What is daring is to make the pursuit of wisdom similar to the pursuit of sexual satisfaction. If one accepts the pragmatic theory of truth, where truth is what it means to us "in the flesh", this becomes very provacative.

What seems odd, given the title, is that the author seems to engage none of the principle issues and speakers on issues in biblical sexuality. He briefly addresses Paul's statements in Romans 1:26,27 but says nothing about how they are embedded in a larger discussion Romans 1:23 - 32 on idolatry. His focus is on law and customs and metaphor. But even so, sometimes his comments seem remarkably naive, such as "The idea that marriage should be thought of as an institution is in some ways odd. Why should the state or religious authorities legislate for marital unions?" Is it not necessary for community authority to legislate marriage, since so much is invested in communal property and care of the children. But, to be fair, that is from a 21st century point of view. The author is looking at a society where wives and children were property of the male head of household.

The footnotes are oddly annoying, as all the references to an entire paragraph are lumped together in one footnote. This is a problem of Yale. And, there is no Bibliography in the Kindle edition.

There is value in the book, but I would carefully weight what it is you want to know about Sex and scripture. If it's modern issues you want, go to Dale Martin's book, "Sex and the Single Savior".

About the Author
Michael Graves has been performing since the age of 4. In fact Michael’s first memory of singing is harmonizing with the whine of his mothers vacuum cleaner at the age of 2. At age 4 he was singing with his mother and father in his fathers traveling Country and Western band. From those very formative performing years a long and gratifying career grew that spans 35+ years and still growing. He has performed at some of the worlds most prestigious venues like the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles , The Ryman Auditorium (Home of the Grand Ole Opry) and The Grand Ole Opry House among many many others. He has performed all over the United States, in Europe, and Asia. He has performed with and for several performers over the years including, Kirstie Alley, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Giovanni Ribisi, David Campbell, Lisa Marie Presley, James Barbour, and many many more. Michael has throughout the years shared his knowledge and abilities as a singer and a performer with several students, aspiring musicians, singers, and performers and has finally put that vast knowledge of musical performance to paper and video in the book Singing From Scratch and the Singing From Scratch Video Course. Michael is a dedicated father and husband and is very proud of all of his children and their artistic abilities. Like anything, there's a science behind it

This book blew my mind! I have never considered that I had a musical bone in my body, but now I see that anyone who can talk can learn to sing. Like anything, there's a science behind it, and one just needs to learn it and practice. The author is smart, insightful, talented and writes with a casual and humorous style making the journey an enjoyable one.

Rudiments With Applications

The author clearly states the readership as third year physics undergraduates.
Rigorous proofs of mathematical nature are eschewed.
Notation is uncluttered and a course in standard undergraduate quantum mechanics is assumed.
Given those constraints, this exposition of the interplay between groups and physics is a welcome addition to the available texts.
The first four chapters are rather elementary, presenting painless entree for the uninitiated.
We meet a nice discussion of induced transformations of the quantum-mechanical Wave-function in Chapter Three;
physical examples follow (Pages 38-43).
Comparison can be made between Young Tableaux, here (Pages 158-164) and Howard Georgi's text on Lie Groups.
The Middle chapters (5,6,7) cover various physics applications including ferromagnetism, molecular vibrations and
Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients.
The Hydrogen Atom and SO(4) explored (Pages 124-127) and Scattering theory concludes Chapter Seven.
The last three chapters (arguably) are the most satisfying aspect of this text:
applications to particle theory, Poincare and Gauge Groups.
It is well to remember "... there is a world of difference between ordinary and hyperbolic trigonometric functions" (Page 171),
this when discussing Special Relativity and the Lorentz Group in Chapter Nine;
the chapter concludes with a thorough derivation of "invariance of the helicity operator under rotations" (Page 191).
Appendix "E" presents recapitulation of Lagrangian Field Theory.
This book is not the place to turn for extensive mathematical rigor or technical considerations.
However, it does provide fascinating accounts of the relationship between group theory and modern physics
and should provide an interesting ingress for students of physics.

Covers a lot of ground, but not very well

At first glance, this book is accessible and well-written. This is an illusion. In this book, Jones tries to cover the theory of finite and continuous groups, representation theory, lie groups and algebras and applications to quantum mechanics, molecular vibrations, special relativity etc. In doing this, he tries not to confuse the reader with too many mathematical details, seeking instead introduce physical ideas quickly. This is in principle a sound idea, but Jones' implementation is abysmally poor. In particular, he often uses terms he does not define and abuses the notation he does define, even in theorems. (The fact that he doesn't prove many theorems makes it harder to work out the meanings of terms from context.) Even worse, there are often theorem-like statements in the text that are not even pointed to as such, but merely mentioned in passing. E.g. 'You don't need to know what a compact group is, just that the last equals sign is OK because the group is compact' (paraphrased) Many of his examples fail to illuminate the principles he is trying to explain and have the flavour of my students' homeworks when they have copied their answers from the back of the book. E.g. 'The answer is 2+1=3' (paraphased). All right, and whence the 2 and 1?
I had taken a basic course in groups based on Armstrong's Symmetry and Groups (which I heartily recommend for a first pass at the subject, although a book on algebra in general might be better) and was reading Jones together with some classmates (post-grads) in the physics department. We spent altogether too much time trying to guess what Jones was trying to say and after that, trying to believe what we thought he said. In the end, after ploughing through six chapters of this book and feeling like Alice in believing more and more impossible things every day (paraphrase! :-) ), I decided to take the long road via 'real maths' books. I'm going through James and Liebeck at the moment, which so far has been a breath of fresh air compared to Jones. After that, Isaacs's book on representations and Humpreys' and Adams's on lie groups and algebras have been recommended to me. It may be of course that there are other physicists who do a better job than Jones. I hear that the books by Cornwell and Wu-Ki Tung are better than Jones', but have not looked at them in too much detail. Perhaps other reviewers will have suggestions.

I have known something about Lie groups and Lie algebras (I have already read first 5 chapters of "Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, and Representations" by Brian C. Hall ) and wanted to combine it with the applications in physics. When I encounter this book, I looked at its content, I thought that I should read it to understand the relation between group theory and physics. But it disappointed me for the following reasons:

(1) It lacks of mathematical precision when it is really needed. (There is even a uncomplete definition eg. "reducible representation" on page 45).

(2) The relations between physics and representation theory is not directly presented. I have passed hard days to understand the relations and finally read this topics from other books.

Therefore, it is very hard to study this book without a teacher. If you will study this subject alone, it is good to begin with the lecture notes (maybe I should say book) by Dimitry Vvedensky at [...]

Like looking in a mirror, felt very understood/similar to author's procrastination.

I found myself in almost EVERY example of procrastination the author talked about. He had some good strategies on overcoming bad habits, thoughts, and self-destructive patterns and behaviors. Now the test will be if I'll procrastinate getting started on the solutions the author suggests, lol!

I CAN do it

I am the biggest procrastinator that I know of and am passing that ability to my children. After reading this book I now have some help hints and tricks to change all that. One thing I really hate doing is cleaning house!! Just reading a few of his hacks I got myself motivated to clean house. I didn't do it all at once. I took lots so little breaks but kept going back to my task. It still isn't fun but now I can see that I have accomplished what I perceived as a daunting task can be done much easier. Thank you for this very helpful book.

The hacks at the end of every chapter are crystal clear, easy to understand and very practical. It helps that the book chapters are really short, no procrastinator would read a dictionary, right? His Absolute Protection is an Absolute WINNER!!

This is another great read by the author in the Absolute series. In this story, we find out Jessika is newly pregnant and Asher is going crazy trying to protect his family from harm. Someone has been sabotaging the family from within and also there has been corporate sabotage by using their friends Luc and Elise to damage their company by using them as the guilty party to damage to company and them.

Throughout this story, there were some twists and turns that had me holding my breath. I found myself at one point thinking the friends were friends when in reality, the friends were enemies(Think of someone really high up in Asher's company and think someone you would least expect) -{No Spoliers here} and the enemies were just somewhat pso-enemies -only time will tell with who is friend and who is foe.

The ending leaves Asher and Jessika in a precarious position and leaves our favorite couple facing the toughest fight ever.

I loved this story and there was some moments that had my panties melting -Asher is definitely a Dom with a capital D. Jessika is so sweet and she loves her man. There are those out to ruin my fav couple and I want them vanquished forever. I gobbled up this story like it was my favorite dark chocolates. You can't just stop with one. There are so many great parts in this story and there are so many twists and turns that made me say "OMG, no you didn't" or " OMG, you're a crazy nutcase" and that is my using polite language. Ms. Du Lys had another hit on her hands. The only thing I hated is I have to wait for part 5 to come out which makes me, her reader, very sad { picture sad eyes here} other than that, WHAT A GREAT , FABULOUS Journey!!

Good Night, this was a hot one!! This couple sparks up the sheets and book pages!! Their love story is paramount and all encompassing. They adore each other. Why they have so much trouble is just not fair!! They don't deserve all this misfortune. They really don't!! Even if he is a Billionaire Dom!! And young and handsome and brilliant to boot!! Not to mention, madly in love with his Jessika, who is an answer to all of his prayers and hidden desires he didn't even know he had!!
I refuse to divulge any spoilers. So, that's all I can say....other than, you MUST read this one if you like a good love story with a lot of spice. I loved it!!

Hot sexy read!!!

This series is so awesome and Jessika and Asher are just so hot together. The sex scenes are so freakin hot that when you read you will need a air conditioner on full blast directed at you to cool off slightly. Jessika and Asher are the couple that you think should live happily ever after but as you can see someone is out to get them, but these two are fighting together against the unseen bully out to get them. They love each other so much and now with the baby coming, you can see how great parents they will make. I cannot wait to read the next and last book about Asher and Jessika to see who has been after them. This is the perfect time to read all the books if you have not. Great job!! Well written!!
